By Gregory Jackson

A standby generator is also known as a backup generator. It protects homes automatically in case of a blackout by providing power directly to your electrical system backing your entire home or just the essential items which depend on the choice of the owner. Getting standby generators is an great idea that give an alternative to power generation and therefore everything can be run smoothly even during blackouts.

These generators do sense power outage and automatically turns on, acting as backup powering your home immediately. Blackouts are unpredictable and may last for hour, days, weeks but the backup generator will provide you with power in such scenario because it senses any fault and gets prepared to restore power.

Natural gas and liquid propane fuels are used in propelling them. Cost of fuels may vary in different countries. The higher the cost of the fuel, the higher the cost of maintaining these appliances is. Those that use natural gas are more cost effective unlike the liquid propane.

While choosing the location of your new standby generator, there are factors that you need to consider. They operate efficiently and safely without endangering lives of other people living in the house. They should always be installed outdoor and on stable ground. This is because they produce a deadly gas known as carbon monoxide.

For electrical and plumbing installations, you need a permit and final says which its issuance is done by the local building authorities. Before installing the generator you need to consult the authorities relevant. While planning to hire an electrician, you need to hire one who is experienced. The reason being they have worked with relevant authorities for a while.

There is the small, mid-size, and large type of generators. The small generates 7 to 10 kW able to run some basic households though cannot run the whole house. We have the mid-size which generates 12 to 20 kW functioning efficiently unlike the small. Large types generate 22-45 kW which can run the entire home. The large types are always permanently locations in protective cases cooled by liquid.

Minimize costs by placing the generator close to the existing electrical service entrance without getting too close. The general guidelines include placing your generator where prevailing winds will blow the exhaust away from the home. Generators should be kept away from bedrooms, living areas and where the noise will not bother the neighbors. All locations should be at least five feet away from openings such as windows and doorways.

Their prices vary; it all depends on the type of the generator. The small, mid-size and large all have different market prices. Purchasing them depends on your affordability which then determines the size one chooses to purchase and install.

As long as people are using electricity, blackouts are inevitable. Blackouts are caused by different ways. Heavy downfalls damage the equipment and cables that ferry electricity. Break down of machines like the turbines that are used in generating of electricity cause blackouts. Some businesses depend on electric power and blackouts affect them thus such business should be installed with generators.
