By Raymond Hughes

Foil stamping, foil embossing and blind embossing are processes that are used to add graphic impact to items like report or book covers, greeting cards, certificates, business cards, stationery and presentation folders. Foil stamping is combined with embossing or debossing to create a foil stamped image refereed to as foil embossing. This technique is done after printing. In order to complete this process, a metal which is called a die has to be used. A die contains a reversed image of the design a person desires. It can be made from magnesium, copper or brass.

In order to emboss the image, a metal die and a counter die that fit together are used to squeeze the substrate. A combination of pressure and heat irons the substrate, raising the level of the image higher than the substrate. The resultant three dimensional images are beautiful when special foil embossing dies are utilized. Although dies can be costly to purchase, they can be used as many times as is necessary.

Dies are used to alter the surface of paper to make it more appealing. Paper that lacks any design is plain. With the use of dies, you can emboss raised three dimensional images on the paper to give it an appealing, artistic look. The dies that are made of magnesium and brass are popular. Brass is durable and workable. Many people opt to use it when performing sophisticated embossing tasks. Dies that are made of brass however need hard tooling and they are more expensive compared to the ones that are made from copper and magnesium.

A magnesium die is ideal for most hot stamping, foil embossing and letterpress applications. It is more affordable than dies made from copper and brass. It is possible to etch a magnesium die photo chemically. Nonetheless, a magnesium die cannot have the detail and precision of complicate brass die.
