Latest Consumer Bureau Issue Is Credit Card Hotline

By Cornelius Nunev

The CFPB has been an issue of major contention, and the charge card complaint hotline is the latest part of the CFPB which is causing a row. Customers could call this hotline to register a complaint, and the agency would compile the information it receives in a database which it would use when and if it decided to act on a complaint. That said, since the Consumer Finan-cial Protection Bureau hasn't disclosed how it proposes to investigate the data, and that is partially why banks want the information restricted. This would help keep all payday cash advance data private.

Banks and card businesses want to avoid crowd-sourced penalties

Daily Finance explains that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is consider-ing a charge card hotline for consumers to complain about prob-lems at, which is causing a lot of debate. The Bureau would take the data customers call in with reporting a business and give it to the states. The complaints would come from crowdsourc-ing. The customers would file the grievances themselves. However, the grievances would also go straight to government officials who could potentially fine card issuers without vetting the complaints. Most banks and card is-suers are hoping to keep the complaints private. That means the information would stay between the financial institution, the government agency and the person who complained instead of having a public database.

Keeping information hidden

Information needs to be private for banks. The flow of raw data can hurt a bank's image quite a bit. Currently, the complaint line is set to go live on July 21, when the CFPB is intended to begin operations. Every little thing said about credit card issuers could be accessed with the way the line is set up. It is true that financial institution and card issuers may not want the information out so nobody knows what is really going on. It is also essential to consider many people will always com-plain about fees, regardless how reasonable they are. It might be good to get data right from the public. Having no restraints on it can be a poor choice though.

Not much of a future could be seen

The CFPB will have authority to regulate, to some extent, vir-tually all manners of customer finance like charge cards, mortgages, payday loans, debit cards and so on. However, the existence of the organization has caused a fight in Congress to break out. Reuters states that there were three bills introduced to limit the bureau recently including two on the director. One of these would give a five member panel control rather than one director while another would keep the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau from having power until a director is assigned. Warren is the White House advi-sor getting the bureau ready that has been considered for director, however Republicans are against that. It doesn't seem likely that it will begin operations in July as sched-uled.
